Why Isn't My Business Showing on Google Maps?
By the Top the Map team · Updated October 23, 2026
Short answer: Google ranks map results on three things: how well your profile matches the search, how close you are to the person searching, and how well known your business is. Most "missing" businesses have a fixable problem in one of those three, or a profile that isn't verified or live yet.
You search for what you do, in your own neighborhood, and your business isn't in the map. Or it shows up when you search your exact name but nowhere else. Here are the usual causes, roughly from most to least common, and what to do about each.
1. Your profile isn't verified, or it's under review
An unverified profile usually won't show in normal map results. Edits can also send a verified profile back into review for a few days.
Check: sign in to Google with the account that manages your profile and search your business name. If you see a "Get verified" button or a message that the profile is under review, that's the issue. Finish verification and avoid big edits (name, address, category) while it's pending.
2. Your categories don't match what people search
Your primary category is one of the strongest signals Google uses. A tattoo shop listed only as "Art studio," or a dentist listed only as "Health," will miss the searches that matter.
Fix: pick the most specific primary category that describes your main service, then add a few secondary categories for the other things you really do. Don't add categories for services you don't offer.
3. You're searching from too far away
Distance matters a lot. If you search from home 10 miles away, you'll see businesses near home, not near your shop. That doesn't mean customers near you can't find you.
Check: search from your business location, or ask a customer nearby what they see. Map rankings change block by block.
4. Your profile is thin
Missing services, no description, no photos and no recent posts all tell Google there isn't much to show. Busier, more complete profiles tend to win close calls.
Fix: list every service with a short description, add real photos of your work and space, write a clear description of what you do, and post an update every week or two. Our profile checklist walks through everything.
5. Few or old reviews
Review count, rating and how recent your reviews are all feed into prominence. A competitor with 90 reviews will usually outrank one with 9, all else equal.
Fix: build a simple habit of asking every customer. Here's how to get more Google reviews the right way.
6. Duplicate or old listings
If you've moved, changed names or had someone else create a listing, you may have two profiles splitting your reviews and confusing Google about where you are.
Fix: search Google Maps for your name, old addresses and old phone numbers. Mark old locations as closed or ask Google support to merge duplicates.
7. Your info doesn't match across the web
When your name, address or phone are different on your website, Yelp, Apple Maps and directories, Google is less sure the details are right.
Fix: pick one exact version of your name, address and phone and make every listing match it, starting with your website, Apple Maps, Bing and Yelp.
8. Your profile was suspended
Adding keywords to your business name, using a virtual office, or listing an address customers can't visit can get a profile suspended. A suspended profile disappears from Maps.
Fix: correct whatever broke the rules first, then file a reinstatement request with proof of your business (a utility bill, business license or photos of your signage).
9. You hide your address (service-area businesses)
Plumbers, painters and other businesses that travel to customers can hide their address. That's correct for those businesses, but it means you rank mostly around where you're actually based, not across your whole service area.
Fix: set realistic service areas, and use posts, photos and reviews that mention the neighborhoods you serve.
Quick answers
How long does it take to show up on Google Maps?
A newly verified profile can appear within days, but ranking well for competitive searches usually takes a few weeks to a few months of steady activity.
Will adding my city to my business name help?
No. Adding keywords that aren't part of your real business name breaks Google's rules and can get your profile suspended.
Do I need a website to show up on Google Maps?
No, but a website that matches your profile helps Google trust your details and gives customers somewhere to go.
