Duplicate or Wrong Google Listings: How to Fix Them
By the Top the Map team · Updated October 23, 2026
Short answer: Google allows one profile per business. If there's an extra one, remove it if it's yours, request ownership if it isn't, or ask Google Maps to merge it. Then fix old addresses and phone numbers on other sites so the duplicates don't come back.
Duplicates usually show up after a move, a name change, or when someone (a past employee, an old marketing company, or Google itself) created a listing years ago. They split your reviews, confuse customers and can even cause Google to hide the wrong one.
1. Find every version of your business
- Search Google Maps for your business name, and for any old names.
- Search your old addresses and old phone numbers.
- Check Apple Maps, Bing, Yelp and Facebook too. Old info there often feeds back into Google.
2. If you manage both profiles
Remove the extra one from your Business Profile account. Before you do, make sure you're removing the right one: removing a profile deletes its content and its managers.
3. If someone else controls the duplicate
- Request access from inside Google. The current owner gets a few days to respond.
- If they approve, you can manage or remove it.
- If they deny it, you can appeal. If they don't respond, you may be able to claim it.
- If the listing isn't verified by anyone, you can claim and verify it yourself.
4. Merging two listings
If Google Maps shows two listings for the same place, suggest an edit on Maps and report it as a duplicate. When Google merges them, reviews are combined, though review replies may be lost.
5. If you moved
Update the address on your existing profile instead of creating a new one. That keeps your reviews. If an old location shows up as a separate listing, mark it as moved or permanently closed.
6. Stop them from coming back
Duplicates often get rebuilt from old data on directories and data providers. Pick one exact version of your name, address and phone, and make every listing match it: your website, Apple Maps, Bing, Yelp, Facebook and the big data aggregators.

Quick answers
Do duplicate listings hurt my ranking?
They can. Reviews and activity get split across listings, and Google may show an outdated one with the wrong address or phone.
Will I lose reviews if I remove a duplicate?
Reviews on the removed profile are deleted with it. If both listings have reviews, a merge through Google Maps is usually the better route.
Can I have more than one profile at the same address?
Only if they're truly separate businesses with different names and their own signage, like two different shops or individual practitioners.
